Please Install Skype From Microsoft Store For Best Experience

I recently ran into a problem attempting to install Microsoft Skype’s latest 8.16.0.4 version. Automatic updates in Skype did NOT notify me there was an upgrade. Also, when manually checking for updates, I just received a message stipulating that I already had the latest version of Skype.

Next, I decided to download version 8.16.0.4 and then upgrade Skype this way. Well low and behold I received this message when attempting to upgrade Skype in this manner:

“Please install Skype from the Microsoft Store for the best experience”

I beg to differ with this statement. I have tested the Windows 10 store Skype application and I did NOT think it was productive. It has less features than the standalone version of Skype.

Is Microsoft trying to persuade individuals from using the standalone version and instead using the Microsoft Store Skype application instead? I performed a quick Google search of this message and came up with a quick solution. For whatever reason this latest version of Microsoft Skype 8.16.0.4 is NOT compatible with Windows 10.

Yes, you read that correctly. However, this version of Microsoft Skype is compatible with both Windows 8 and 7. Right click the Skype-8.16.0.4.exe file and then select “Properties”.

Now choose the “Compatibility” tab. Under “Compatibility mode” choose Windows 7. Also, you could try Windows 8.

If you notice, in this compatibility mode tab, Microsoft Skype 8.16.0.4 supports Windows 8, 7, Vista service pack 2, Vista service pack 1, XP service 3, XP service pack 2, millenium edition, 98, and 95. However, this software will NOT fucking install on Windows 10. Now that you have changed the compatibility mode, you should be able to install Microsoft Skype 8.16.0.4 on Windows 10. I have no idea why this software won’t install without changing the compatibility mode.

However, I can not help but think perhaps Microsoft is trying to force users into using the Windows 10 application from the Microsoft Store.

Skype App For Windows – Version 8.16.0.4 Released

The Microsoft Skype app for Windows version 8.16.0.4 has been released. There are no documented changes for this version of Skype, as of this blog post creation. This version was released on February twenty six two thousand eighteen.

However, I could not find out exact details from an official Skype support page listing their version releases. I was NOT able to upgrade Skype by checking for updates. Also, I was NOT able to manually install this update by downloading version 8.16.0.4.

I kept getting this message:

“Please install Skype from the Microsoft Store for the best expierence”

Why the fuck is Microsoft blocking the ability to install this software standalone? Why even bother allowing people to download the latest version of Microsoft Skyp3 8.16.0.4 if they then disable the installer? In my opinion Microsoft is trying to force endusers to use the Windows Store version of Skype.

There is a huge difference to me between the Windows Store version and the standalone version. I do NOT like any applications from the Windows Store quite frankly. If I figure out a way to install the standalone version of Skype 8.16.0.4, I will write up a seperate blog.

I do NOT use Microsoft Skype that often. However, this still irritates me the hoops you have to go through to just upgrade Microsoft software. Microsoft Skype is a free audio, chat, and video application that allows you to communicate with friends, family, business associates, etc. over the Internet.

Skype app for windows has a built in automatic updates, that will download and upgrade Skype, if an update is available. Another way to upgade your version of Skype is to browse to “Help” then choose “Check For Updates” from the top menu. If there is a new version available, you will be prompted to either download it now or decide later.

You can always disable Microsoft Skype automatic updates from “Options”. You will get notified if there is a Skype update but you get to choose whether or not you want to install. You can always get the most current version of Microsoft Skype App for windows from this static link.

Point of Sales – Installation Not Correct Check Your PHP.INI File

I recently received a request for a receipt from one of my customers, whom puchased a used computer. I do NOT normally print out receipts. The only time I give a receipt to a customer, is if they pay by credit card.

I have never had any major problems by not giving out a printed receipt. I have on occasion received a request for a printed receipt. I decided to look for an open source point of sales software that I could install on my virtual private server.

I found Open Source Point of Sale, which is entirely free. This software requires PHP, a sequential database like MYSQL, and webserver software ie. Apache or Nginx. The installation went smoothly until I received this error upon attempting to login as admin.

The installation is not correct, check your php.ini file.

A quick google research revealed different possible solutions. I was able to resolve this error by installing a missing PHP-INTL module. Also, I had to enable this module within the PHP configuration.

This requires that PHP gets recompiled on your webserver. I use Centos Web Control Panel. I browsed to “PHP Version Switcher” under “PHP Settings”.

Under “PHP version:” you want to select your current version of PHP and then scroll down until you see “intl” in a list of modules. Place a check box next to “intl” to enable this module. Now you want to click on “Build”.

PHP will be rebuilt with the PHP-INTL module enabled. This took around 5 minutes to complete on my virtual private web server. This could take longer to complete.

I was able to monitor the PHP being recompiled by viewing the log file real time with the tail command. Once PHP was rebuilt then I was able to successfully login to Open Source Point of Sales software.

Teamviewer Remote Desktop – Portable Version

Teamviewer remote desktop is one of my preferred remote desktop connection software. There is actually a portable version of Teamviewer available for free. This software functions similar to the desktop version.

I prefer to keep my Microsoft Windows 10 machine as clutter free as possible. I removed Teamviwer 11 and now exclusively use Teamviwer remote desktop portable version after testing this software. This software takes up close to 80 megabytes of disk space.

You can run Teamviewer remote desktop portable version off of a Universal Serial Bus drive or Compact Disc Read Only Memory disk. I have not tried running this off of a network drive, but I think it would be possible. According to the official Teamviewer website, this portable version “…comprises all the features of the full version of TeamViewer…”

This is good news for me as I do NOT like having to install countless pieces of software cluttering up this Windows 10 machine. All you have to do is download Teamviewer portable and burn it to CD-ROM or USB flash drive. Then just open up TeamViewer.exe.

This software supports Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, Linux, Google Android, and Apple iOS operating systems. You can download the newest version of Teamviewer remote desktop from this static link. You do NOT and will NOT be able to update this portable version.

You would need to browse to Teamviewer’s download area to download the most recent portable version of this remote desktop connection software. I have been satisfied with this portable version of Teamviewer. Also, 80 megabytes of disk space is sufficient enough reason for me to rely on this portable version.

Any time I can keep my Microsoft Winblows machine clutter free, I am a happy technology camper.

Antivirus and Security Software – Avast Version 18.1.3800

Antivirus and security software Avast version 18.1.3800 has been released. I could NOT find out specific information about this version of Avast directly from this company. I guess I could have investigated using a computer that I have Avast antivirus and security software installed on.

I was NOT able to find out what exact versions of Apple Macintosh operating system and Linux distributions are supported.

Debian Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc. are supported. Red Hat Enterprise and SUSE Linux are supported.

Microsoft Corporation released cumulative update KB2952664 on February fourteen two thousand eighteen for Windows 7 operating system. Actually, this KB2952664 update was released on October thirty first two thousand seventeen as an optional update. I have no idea why Microsoft changed this from optional to recommended.

This update does NOT include any bug and or security fixes. This update does not include any new features. According to Microsoft this is what this update provides:

“This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. The diagnostics evaluate the compatibility status of the Windows ecosystem, and help Microsoft to ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows. There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update.”

Some clown at Microsoft

If you have been keeping up to date with Microsoft Windows 7 security updates, then this will become only update available for install. However, if you have gotten behind or skipped some updates, those updates will also be installed. You can obtain this update via Microsoft Windows update or Microsoft Update Catalog website.

This update applies to Windows 7 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2008 release 2 Service Pack 1. Microsoft corporation is not aware of any issues after installing this update. You will need to reboot your computer in order for this update to completely install.

This latest version of Google Chrome affects Google Chrome web browser on Linux, MAC, and Microsoft Windows platforms.

There are two Google Chrome versions for Windows operating systems, 64.0.3282.167 and 64.0.3282.168. I have no idea why there are two versions. Also, I do NOT know if there is any significant differences between the two Google Chrome browsers.
