Service Pack XP 3 – Fixes For “Access Denied” Error Messages

Servic Pack XP 3

Some users are reporting that they are receiving an "Access Denied" message when trying to install Windows XP Service Pack 3. I am going to show you today some potential fixes for this error. One potential fix is to reboot your computer, and then try to install Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3 manually, by downloading and running the service pack 3 install file from MajorGeeks.

Microsoft has removed the ability to download Windows XP service pack three directly from their servers. You can download Microsoft XP Service Pack 3. Another fix is assuming you have been trying to install Service Pack 3 with an administrator account.

You can try resetting the security settings for Microsoft Windows XP. A system file may be locked for some strange reason. You can follow this short tutorial from Microsoft, to reset your security settings.

Windows XP Security Settings

Another possibility would be to reboot your computer then disabling any anti virus, adware, spyware, malware applications you have installed and then attempting to install Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3. You can follow the tutorial for this from Microsoft. Go ahead and skip to "Method 2" under "Resolution" since you have already tried method 1 under Resolution.

Microsoft Support XP

A fourth possibility, if none of the methods above work, is to reset the registry and file permissions. This is an advanced method and can be completed by following "Method 1" under "Advanced Troubleshooting" section.

Microsoft Support XP

You can also read through the prerequisites before installing Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3, if you would like from Microsoft. There are also some additional troubleshooting steps in that article for "access denied" errors when attempting to install Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3.

Windows XP Tech Support

You might want to keep any of the Windows XP service pack 2 updates under add and remove programs in case you want to roll back to Service Pack 2 in the future. If you delete service pack 2 then you will NOT be able to roll back to that service pack. You may want to leave it installed in case of an emergency.

Sometimes Microsoft knowledge base update KB911895 fails to install after upgrading to Microsoft Windows XP service pack 3. You can browse to C:\Windows\system32\drivers and then delete or rename the wdf01000.sys file. After deleting or renaming the file, you go to windows update and select "Custom", then select hardware updates and "HID Non-User Input Data Filter" should be there again. Now select download and install.

Hopefully, Microsoft Knowledge Base update KB911895 will install successfully this time. Another option if that does not fix the KB911895 problem, is to then boot into Microsoft Windows safe mode and download and install this update manually from Microsoft.

Computer Shuts Off – Fix This Windows Computer Reboot Problem

Computer Shuts Off

Does your Microsoft Windows based computer shut off when you turn it on? If you have tried pressing the F8 key, to enter the advanced boot options and tried all safe mode options, as well as the system restore feature, and nothing helped, there are other trouble shooting options. I assume you have tried "Last known configuration" when hitting the F8 key.

Also, when selecting any of the safe mode options does the computer boot into safe mode successfully or does the computer power itself off again? If the computer boots successfully into Microsoft Windows safe mode with networking I recommend running some malware, spyware, and virus scans. If you have the Microsoft Windows Vista installation media ie. DVD or restore compact disc that came with your computer, you can perform a repair installation.

You can follow this tutorial to perform a repair installation.

Repair Vista

If you do not have a Microsoft Windows Vista recovery CD-ROM or Microsoft Windows Vista DVD you can download a Microsoft windows vista recovery disk via the following link.

PC Recovery Disk

This file is an iso file so you will have to burn the iso file onto a CD-ROM and make it bootable. There is a tutorial on how to do this if you don't know how.

Burning ISO

You might be able to perform a Microsoft Windows system restore. You would restore windows back to before you were having this problem with Microsoft office. I can give you instructions showing you how to perform a system restore.

Click the Microsfot Windows Vista start menu button. Type "System Restore" into a search box. Select "System Restore".

Click on "Continue" in the user account control dialogue. Click on "Next". You should see a list of restore points.

Choose one that you think is before you were having problems with Microsoft Office. There might be a "Show restore points older than 5 days" check box. Selecting that check box will show more restore points if available.

Choose your restore point by clicking on one. Click on "Next". In the last screen you want to click on "Finish".

This will begin the Microsoft windows system restore process. Your computer will automatically get rebooted. Hopefully, this will fix your Microsoft Office problem.

If not, I have two additional scans you can run. You can run both check disk and system file check scans. You must open a command prompt with administrator rights.

Type in the following command:

sfc /scannow

I recommend running this scan three times. Now you want to schedule a check disk scan. Type this command into a command prompt:

chkdsk c: /f /r

You will be presented with a volume in use message. Type Y for yes at that prompt. You will need to restart your computer.

A check disk scan should automatically begin with in 10 seconds. Do NOT touch your keyboard. If that check disk scan does not start, then follow the previous instructions to schedule it again.

These instructions were written for Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. These solutions would also work with other versions of Microsoft windows operating systems. For example Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 7.

Task Manager Application – Cannot Get Task Manager to Work?

Task Manager Application

Are you no longer able to get into Windows task manager to stop processes and applications from running? This is a sure sign that you have adware, spyware, malware, and or viruses on your computer. CCleaner exe is free and basically just deletes any unnecessary files and registry items to make your computer run better. I think you may still have a virus or some kind of malware on your computer if Windows Task Manager won't open up, after running CCleaner.

If you haven't already, run a full system scan with another FREE program called MalwareBytes used for deleting malware, and then run a full virus scan with your installed antivirus software. I know they may take a while to run but I have seen running a complete virus scan including CCleaner and Malwarebytes scans, which fixed major adware, spyware, malware, virus issues. If you are still unable to get Windows task manager to work after running scans with the three afore mentioned programs then you might try booting the computer into windows safe mode and this time try using System Restore.

Don't have a reliable antivirus program installed? Check out Avast discount anti virus. Download their FREE home edition today and get a FREE one year license.

Sound Fix – Have Problems With Your Computer’s Audio Device?

Sound Fix

Having problems with your computer's audio device? Check to make sure your able to hook up head phones or another set of speakers to your computer first. It's possible it's an issue with your sound card driver if your not able to hear any sound when hooking up different headphones or speakers.

If it's a problem with the sound driver you can go to "Start" then "Control Panel". Go into "Device Manager" and see if there is a yellow exclamation point next to your audio device. If the yellow exclamation point exists you can right click the audio device and select delete.

There is a refresh icon in Device Manager that you can click after deleting the audio device. Device Manager will find the audio device again and try to install the drivers for it again. If windows update is enabled it will try to download the drivers from the internet other wise you will be prompted for your installation media ie. original sound card CD or Windows CD.

Mass Effect Game – Cant Get Mass Effect to Play on Windows 7?

Mass Effect Game

Can't get Mass Effect to play on Windows 7? You can download and install a most current patch for Mass Effect. If that does not resolve your issue you can try upgrading your video card driver by going into your Windows 7 control panel.

In device manager find and highlight your video display adapter or graphics adapter and then double click it or right click it and select "Properties". In a properties there should be an upgrade driver button. If you are using windows updates then a most current driver should then download via windows updates.

Another option would be to try changing a Mass Effect desktop shortcut to "Run as administrator". You right click a Mass Effect desktop shortcut and select "Properties" from that menu. Go to a "Compatability" tab in properties and check a "Run this program as an administrator" box.

Click "OK" and then try to run that program again.

Mass Effect Game

Windows Chkdsk – Did Your Windows Computer Crash Unexpected?

Windows Chkdsk

What to do if your windows computer crashes unexpectedly. Some users receive "C:$Secure is corrupt Pls run Chkdsk utility" error message. You can boot your computer into safe mode by hitting an F8 key right after your computer BIOS screen flashes and before windows boots and select "Safe Mode".

In Safe Mode click on "Start" then select "Run" and type CMD in the box and click "Ok". In that black command prompt window type chkdsk /r. It may take a while for it to run but hopefully it will fix any bad sectors.

Another option is to boot your computer in safe mode again and this time run chkntfs /x c: at a command prompt. Finally, you boot off your Windows installation CD and hit the R key to get into the Recovery Console. Once in Recovery Console run chkdsk /p /r.

If that doesn't fix your problem you can try a repair installation of Windows. Another option would be to boot into safe mode and this time select "Last Known Good Configuration". You don't have to use your Windows media to boot with last known good configuration.

Windows Chkdsk

If you hit an F8 key after your BIOS screen flashes and right before windows tries to boot you will see a menu. Please select "Last Known Good Configuration" from that menu. Hopefully the computer will boot normally.

It's worth trying last known good configuration because I have seen it fix issues like this before. Yes its possible your hard drive is failing unfortunately, but it's worth trying to repair your installation of Windows.

Two additional repair solutions are specifically geared towards Microsoft Windows Vista operating sytem. One option is if the hard drive is still good would be to run Vista's "System File Checker" in safe mode. You can follow those instructions below.

System File Checker

A second option would be to run an upgrade or repair installation of Vista. You shouldn't loose any of your data but some Vista settings might be reset. You can follow some instructions for a repair/upgrade installation below.

Pdf Problem – Can’t open .pdf files in Adobe Acrobat Reader?

pdf Problem

Unable to open .pdf files in Adobe Acrobat Reader all of the sudden? You may receive the "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:Program Files (x86)AdobeReader This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." error message when attempting to open Adobe Acrobat PDF files. If removing and reinstalling the program does not solve the problem then the following solutions may work.

1. One of the easiest solutions is to go into the properties of the AcroRd32.exe executable by right clicking on the AcroRd32.exe executable and then selecting "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". You may also have to do this on the Acrobat.exe executable as well.

2. Another solution if the previous one doesn't work is to try right clicking the executable(s) again only this time select "Run as Administrator". Then proceed with the first set of instructions.

Transfer Files Computer – How to Move Data to Microsoft PCs

Transfer Files Cable

How to transfer files between two or more computers running Microsoft Windows. Some computer users like to transfer files between two Windows computers using "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". This often requires using a direct cable connection between the two computers with a serial cable.

Both computers must have a serial port and transfer times can be slow, especially when transferring larger amounts of data. An option with quicker data transfer rates is using the USB ports on the computers and the help of a special transfer cable much like the cable pictured.

Transfer Files Cable

Other options would be to transfer your data via a USB flash drive, external USB hard drive, or setting up a simple home network with your souce and destination computer(s) plugged into a hub, router, or switch. Looking into what hardware or software is needed before attempting to transfer your data is highly recommended.

iTunes Problems – Fix QuickTime Update Causing iTunes to Fail

Apple QuickTime updates may cause Apple iTunes software program to fail. You may receive the "Need to repair or reinstall QuickTime" message after installing Apple QuickTime update(s). Sometimes a complete removal and re installation is necessary to clear these software program errors and problems.

You may need to clean up your computer's registry entries for Apple quick time and Apple iTunes, so that when reinstalling both programs you start out with a clean Microsoft Windows registry. Be sure to backup your Microsoft Windows registry with my preferred PC optimization tool that I am recommending you download and install. This PC optimization tool has been quite reliable in all the years I have used it.

You want to download and install this PC optimization tool. From within this program run a registry cleaner utility. Please backup your Microsoft Windows registry when prompted.

This should clean out any Microsoft Windows registry settings that is not being removed for Apple quick time and Apple iTunes. In this PC optimization tool, click the "Registry" button on the left hand side. On the left hand side you can select the items under "Registry Cleaner "that you want to scan.

All of them are checked by default. It is recommended that you leave all the items checked. Click the "Scan for Issues" button.

You will see a progress indicator bar and a list of potential problems. Once this Microsoft Windows registry scan is completed, you can then review the list of problems. You can save this list to a text file, by right clicking anywhere inside this list.

Now click on "Save to text file". If you want this PC Optimization tool to skip any of these problems it has found, then right click the problem, and then click "Add to Exclude List" button.

You can review all of the current group of excluded files, folders, and Microsoft Windows registry entries in this "Exclude" area of the "Options" pane. Now you want to click "Fix selected issues" to fix these Microsoft windows registry problems. You will now be prompted to backup the Microsoft Windows registry first.

It is highly recommended that you click on "Yes". Choose a location where to save this Microsoft Windows registry backup file. Click on "Save" to complete this process.

This PC optimization tool displays the very first Microsoft Windows registry problem with a possible solution. You can speed up this process by clicking on "Fix All Selected Issues". After running that Microsoft Windows registry cleaner then you can reinstall Apple QuickTime and Apple iTunes.

Hopefully it will resolve your issue. This Microsoft Windows registry PC optimization tool also has a "Cleaner" tool. This will remove any Internet cache, Internet history, cookies, download history, temporary Internet files, temporary files, and thumbnail cache. This is an added bonus tip.

If you allow your Microsoft Windows computer to accumulate all of the a fore mentioned files, then this can cause potential problems with your computer. Click the "Cleaner" button on the left hand side. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.

Depending on how many of these files have accumulated on your Microsoft Windows operating system, this tool can take a few seconds to a few minutes to run this scan. This program will tell you how much disk space in megabytes of junk files have been removed. I encourage you to keep running this "Cleaner" scan until nothing to very little junk files are found.

This PC optimization tool is my preferred system cleanup tool of choice and I actually use this program as routine maintenance on the few computers that have Microsoft Windows operating system installed.
