Windows 10 Advanced Options – Can Fix Windows

Another Microsoft Windows 10 update finds a victim. This time I received another help request for a computer with Microsoft Windows 10 operating. Here is the initial original request:

“Hello, my laptop wouldn’t turn on!! Don’t know what to do as I think due to last time updated windows it is running through a problem. If you can suggest something please?

I am not too sure about it but I think I installed the windows 10 update. Led lights are on there are two options restart or advanced troubleshoot.”

Here is my initial original response:

Are you able to access the advanced troubleshooting menu? If so, you can perform a system file check and check disk scan. Select “Troubleshoot” then select “Command Prompt”.

In a command prompt window, type this command:

sfc /scannow

Once that system file check scan completes you can then run a check disk scan. Type this command:

chkdsk c: /f /r

Type Y for yes if a volume in use message is displayed. Once these two scans complete, then reboot your computer and see if it will boot properly. Also, make certain you do not have any external devices attached.

For example USB flash drive, external hard drive, external printer, etc. The last two stages can take quite some time. Hopefully, the check disk scan will fix your problem.

You could try performing a “Reset this PC” or System Restore. Actually system restore should not remove your programs. Restore windows back to before you were having these problems.

If system restore does not work you could try Reset this PC. There are two choices with reset this PC. The first one will save your personal files.

The second one will wipe your entire hard drive so just to warn you about reset this PC. In order to access Microsoft windows system restore and reset this PC, you need to enter the advanced troubleshooting menu. In certain cases Microsoft Windows 10 will present you with two options, repair or troubleshoot.

Once you select “Troubleshoot” and enter advanced troubleshooting, you will be able to use advanced troubleshooting tools. There may be a “Reset this PC” option when you first select “Troubleshoot”. This will allow you to reset your Microsoft Windows 10 computer back to when it was first installed.

There are two choices:

* Keep my files
* Remove everything

Keep my files will keep your personal files. However, this tool will remove all your installed applications and programs. Remove everything is quite self explanatory.

All of your data will be removed and your hard drive will get formatted. Microsoft Windows 10 will then be reinstalled. There is a possibility that reset this PC will not work.

If this is the case, then you want to try to perform a Microsoft Windows system restore. In the “Troubleshoot” screen you should see “Advanced Options”. In advanced options you should find “System Restore”.

You will want to choose a restore point back to before your Microsoft Windows 10 computer booted successfully. There is a possibility that a system restore will fail. If you have exhausted all other tools, you might be able to fix Microsoft Windows 10 with “Go back to the previous build”.

Go back to the previous build is similar to Microsoft Windows system restore. It will remove all software installed since that previous build. Also, some of your Microsoft Windows settings may get lost.

This tool will also keep your personal files. Hardware device drivers will get reverted back to the previous Microsoft Windows 10 operating system build. If you have attempted all of these troubleshooting tools and still cannot fix Microsoft Windows 10, then you might be fucked.

You could try creating a Microsoft Windows 10 USB recovery drive. You would boot off this recovery USB flash drive and perform all of the previous troubleshooting steps. You might save yourself time and sanity by just reinstalling Microsoft Windows 10 after backing up any important data first.
