Trend Micro Antivirus – How to Re-enable Base Filter Engine

You just got this message “Your Personal Firewall has shut down”. After restarting windows and “Trendmicro Internet Security” software a same message persists. How do you restart a “base filter engine”?

You have rebooted, restored back one month, turned Trend micro on and off. Can you please verify and set specific Trend Micro services to automatic. Are you using Trend products for both firewall and anti-virus?

Click on your Windows “Start” button. Click “Run” and then type in a run box “SERVICES.MSC”. When a services window appears, look for “Trend Micro Proxy Service”, “Unauthorized Change Prevention Service” and “Personal Firewall”.

Double click on a startup type: select “AUTOMATIC”, click “apply” then OK. Set only those services that you see to Automatic, and also try to start them. You can try to manually start them and see if they do or if they error out.

In services you should be able to start those services that you set to automatic. Start them up and then try to update Trend. If you still get errors you can reboot your computer and see if that resolves them.

If not, what version of Trend are you using ie. 2008, 2009, 2010, etc.? You can set “unauthorized change prevention service” to automatic too. Do you get those errors when you just try to enter Trend Micro?

I recommend rebooting your computer now that those services are set to automatic and also running a repair on Trend software if possible via Add/Remove programs in control panel when you have time.

Mcafee Subscription – How to Verify Your Subscription Renewal

You have already paid for your McAfee Subscription for one year, you renewed it recently. It still reads on your McAfee home screen that your subscription ends today. Did you have automatic renewal enabled?

If you did then Mcafee would have charged your credit card automatically and renewed your subscription for another year. If you manually paid your renewal payment then that might be why it still has an expiration date. Also, I have read on some other Mcafee forums that a day after your old subscription period, then Mcafee’s system auto renews your subscription for another year.

https://community.mcafee.com/message/89453

“After talking with Customer Support, we were told that after completing this installation, our subscription would automatically renew after the expiration date. So I guess we’ll find out on 9/30 if this really has been renewed. Our expiration date on the Security Center still indicates expiring on 9/29/2008.

It would have been really helpful if there would have been some type of notification provided that indicates our subscription has been renewed for a year. Instead we have wasted many many hours of our time, other customer support people, and the help of others on this forum. The Customer Support person I just talked with said they have been through this before”

Well I think as long as Mcafee received your renewal payment that tomorrow it will automatically renew your subscription with them and state on your Mcafee Home Screen that it renewed. As long as your antivirus still works tomorrow then it renewed. If your Mcafee virus protection stops working tomorrow because of auto renewal didn’t go through for some reaon, you can contact them via Mcafee chat and email support.

Instant Messaging Virus – Are You Unable to Use Chat Programs?

You can’t chat anymore and think it has to do with encryption. Your chat screen won’t even come up. You have restarted your computer.

You can try to test your chat programs with Windows safe mode with networking. Reboot your computer and after your computer splash screen flashes and before Windows tries to boot press your F8 key until an advanced boot options menu opens. Select “Safe mode with networking”.

Test your chat programs in safe mode. If you are successful then I think you might have some adware, spyware, virus, malware, etc. that is causing your problem. Once in safe mode with networking please download and install MalwareBytes.

Make sure to update Malwarebytes first. Please run a full scan for viruses, malware, adware, etc. with that program. Also, run a full virus scan on your computer with whatever anti-virus you have installed. Reboot that computer in normal mode and hopefully that will resolve your problem.

Multiple Antivirus – Do You Need Multiple AntiVirus Programs?

Gupdate.exe, what is this and how do you fix it? Would that cause your IE to hang first three times you try to log on? Or is it unrelated?

That is a Google update program. Is it causing problems with your computer? Are you wanting to remove that program?

It shouldn’t because Google updater just updates programs like Google chrome, Earth, Picasa, etc. that you might have installed on your computer. You can always go into task manager when Interent Explorer is hanging by pressing your CTRL, ALT, and DELETE keys at same time and then clicking on task manager. In task manager you can look to see if any processes are taking up too much CPU time.

You could check this way to see if gupdate.exe is hogging your system resources. You might want to clean up your temporary internet files. Has internet explorer just recently started to hang?

No, it started a while ago and then got better but you have both AVG and Comcast Antivirus programs running and you are wondering if that is what is causing this problem. You just saw that gupdate.exe in an event log as informational that it could not find something it needed. Yes, I think having two anti virus programs running at same time is causing your problem.

They will take up valuable processing time and will walk over each other so to speak. I recommend removing one of them and hopefully that will improve your computer’s performance.

Personal Antivirus Removal – PC or Laptop Running Strange?

Is your PC or Laptop running strange? Adware or advertising supported software is any software package which automatically plays, displays, or downloads advertisements to a computer after the software is installed on it or while the application is being used. Some types of adware are also spyware and can be classified as privacy invasive software.

Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner’s informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code. The term “computer virus” is sometimes used as a catch all phrase to include all types of malware, including true viruses.

Spyware is a type of malware that is installed on computers and collects information about users without their knowledge. The presence of spyware is typically hidden from the user. Typically, spyware is secretly installed on the user’s personal computer. Sometimes, however, spyware such as keyloggers are installed by the owner of a shared, corporate, or public computer on purpose in order to secretly monitor other users.

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer. The term “virus” is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, adware, and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. A true virus can only spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code) when its host is taken to that target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive. Viruses can increase their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files on a network file system or a file system that is accessed by another computer.
