Error Opening File For Writing VideoLAN\VLC\libvlc.dll Fix

I recently attempted to upgrade VLC open source media player from version 2.2.6 to version 2.2.8 and received this error.

Error Opening File For Writing VideoLAN\VLC\libvlc.dll

I found a solution to my predicament. You can try to end any running instances of VLC open source media player. Also, you can stop any other applications or processes that might be using VLC open source media player.

Also, you can just reboot your computer and then attempt to upgrade VLC open source media player. In order to stop processes on Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10 you open up task manager. You can press “Ctrl” “Alt” and “Delete” keys at the same time to open up task manager.

Another way to open up task manager is to right click on the Microsoft windows taskbar and then choose “Task Manager”. Once task manager opens up look for any instances of VLC open source media player under “Apps” and “Background Processes”. To stop a process or application, right click it and then choose “End task”.

That VLC process should eventually disappear from task manager. Repeat this step for multiple instances of VLC open source media player. Once you have stopped all VLC processes then attempt to upgrade VLC media player.

You may need to wait a little while for that process or processes to stop running. You can always just reboot your computer instead.
