Ubuntu Update – Started Update UTMP About System Runlevel Changes

I recently installed a Ubuntu Linux operating system update on a desktop computer running Ubuntu Linux version 16.04. I typed in apt-get install dist-upgrade into a terminal window with root account privileges. These updates caused this Ubuntu Linux operating system desktop computer to no longer be able to browse a local Microsoft Windows network.

I decided to upgrade this version of Ubuntu Linux operating system version 16.04 to version 17.04. I used the Ubuntu Linux operating system software updater graphical user interface tool. After the installation completed, this desktop computer kept hanging at "Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes".

Apparently, this upgrade to Ubuntu Linux operating system version 17.04 corrupted up the video drivers. This was a dual core desktop computer with an integrated Intel video graphics processing unit. I found this Ask Ubuntu forum post pertaining to this Ubuntu update problem that had a solution that fixed this problem.

When this desktop computer would hang at this "Started Update UTMP about System Runlevel Changes", I pressed the Ctrl plus Shift plus F1 function keys simultaneaously. A command prompt login window screen appeared. I logged in with the appropriate Ubuntu Linux operating system credentials. I elevated to root privileges by issuing the su super user command.

I went ahead and installed the Intel video graphics processing unit drivers for Ubuntu Linux operating system with this command below.

# apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

I rebooted this Ubuntu Linux operating system based desktop computer with version 17.04 installed and now X windows loaded properly. The graphical user interface worked normally and I was able to log into the Ubuntu Linux operating system desktop. Also, I was able to successfully access the Microsoft Windows networked computers.

You see I have an older Dell desktop computer with Microsoft Windows Vista operating system installed, that I use for a file server. This Ubuntu Linux operating system based desktop computer now with version 17.04 is a data recovery computer. I prefer using Linux operating system to recover computer data.
