My current voice over internet protocol service providor is This type of voice over internet protocol service is not for an average user. You will need to know how to configure a session initiation protocol telephone, smartphone application, telephone system, etc.

Also, it helps to know some of the basics of voice over internet protocol and session initiation protocol. I recently acquired three Cisco 7960 Internet protocol telephones. Luckily, they were already configured for use with sessition initiation protocol.

I did not have to install any firmware in order to convert this telephone into using session initiation protocol. I am going to walk you through configuring your Cisco 7960 for use with You need to unlock that telephone configuration by pressing the “settings” button.

You will want to scroll down and highlight the “Unlock Config” option. The “Configuration Password” option will open up. You will need to enter cisco for a password.

Then you can click “Accept” after you enter in cisco. You have now just removed the lock for your Cisco 7960 internet protocol telephone’s configuration. You can now edit those settings.

You can click on “Network Configuration” and then press “Select”. You will want to scroll down and make sure dynamic host configuration protocol is enabled if you have a dynamic host configuration protocol server on your network. If you choose to set a static network configuration, you will want to make sure to configure it for your local network.

If you have a local trivial file transfer protocol server, you can scroll down and change that server address. You do not need a trivial file transfer protocol server as it is optional. After making any necessary changes in “Network Configuration”, you can click on the “Back” button.

Now you want to select “SIP Configuration”. You can choose “Line 1” and then click on select. As long as you removed the lock from this telephone’s configuration successfully, you should see an “Edit” option.

You will want to click on “Edit” to edit line number one. You want to enter in your account number in that “Authentication Name” field. You can enter your password in that “Authentication Password̶ field.

You will want to scroll down and highlight “Proxy Address”. Then you can enter your appropriate proxy address for example You can click “Save” after making any changes.

You will want to scroll down and look for “Preferred Codec”. recommends choosing the g711ulaw codec. You can look for “Register Expires” option. You can edit this and change to 180, which is what recommends.

Finally, you can look for and make sure that “Register With Proxy” is set to YES. Now you will want to press “Save” anytime you make any changes in these menus. You can press back until you get to the Cisco telephone home screen display.

Now you can finally attempt to make an outgoing call. If you are not able to make a successful call, you may need to adjust the “Proxy Port” in “SIP Configuration” settings. Then change “Line 1” as appropriate.
